Baseline observations and normal parameters - Oxygen Saturation Flashcards
What do oxygen saturations measure?
The percentage of haemoglobin that is bound with oxygen
What is a normal level of oxygen saturation?
over 95%
What is it worth noting when taking oxygen saturation levels for patients exposed to carbon monoxide or fires?
oximeters cannot distinguish between different forms of haemoglobin, so carbon monoxide will show as normal oxygenated blood so inflate the readings
What 4 environmental factors cause a poor reading of oxygen saturations?
Cold hands
nail polish
excess movement
medications
How will the normal level of oxygen saturation differ between patients?
Those with chronic respiratory conditions will have oxygen saturation of 88-92%
What is a pleth wave?
A waveform given alongside an oxygen saturation reading
How does the quality of the pleth wave relate to oxygen saturation reading?
If the pleth wave isn’t the same as the ECG and/or heart rate, as well as abnormally flat/low, then the oxygen saturation is inaccurate
What are the steps to taking oxygen saturations?
- Turn device on
- Explain procedure and consent
- Place clip fully over fingertip
- Try get reading for at least 5 minutes
How can you obtain a reliable oxygen saturation?
Good connection to finger
Well defined waveform
How does pulse oximetry work to produce oxygen saturation levels?
A LED passes through the finger to a detector on the other side. Oxygenated blood and de-oxygenated blood absorb light differently so is detected
What does SpO2 mean?
Saturation of peripheral Oxygen
What does PaO2 mean?
partial pressure of oxygen
What does PaCO2 mean?
The partial pressure of carbon dioxide
