What is a barrier?
- something unique to the health and social care system that prevents individual accessing a service.
Types of barriers and examples:
- physical eg steps, heavy doors, narrow corridors.
- sensory eg loud environments, dark rooms
- social and cultural eg all male staff, discriminatory language
- language eg appointments made/ discussed on the phone
- geographical eg no local service, lack of public transport
- resource eg staff shortages, waiting lists
- financial eg payments for services or resources
Physical barriers - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
-Who affect + explanation:
1. individuals with mobility issues - difficult to travel to hospital - hard attend appointments
2. parents with prams/ pushchairs - limited access to services lack of lifts/ ramps - can’t attend appointments/access support
3. individual with reduces stamina/ strength - physical abilities prevent from exercising: worsen health and wellbeing
Ways to overcome:
- wide doorways
- automatic doors
- accessible toilets
- lifts and stair lifts
- hoists
- over chair tables
Sensory barriers - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affect + Explanation:
1. Hearing impairments - hard hear conversations, hard follow instructions from GP so difficult to improve their condition
2. Visual impairments - hard read info, difficult to know how to treat condition
3. sensory issues - bright lights and loud noises feel overwhelmed/ sensory overload, hard to attend appointments.
Ways to overcome:
- hearing loops
- BSL interpreters
- braille signs and leaflets
- staff collecting vulnerable users from waiting areas.
- quiet clinics.
Social and cultural - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affected + explanation:
1. Different cultural beliefs/ traditions - not understand how services operate in UK (don’t know services they are entitled to)
2. experienced stigma/ discrimination
- lead to lack of trust in the services (avoid medical advice due to concerns about being treated fairly)
3. fear losing independence - refuse recommended support (home care, assisted living due to fear of losing independence)
Ways to overcome:
- campaigns
- inclusive posters and leaflets
- male and female service providers
- women and men only services
- collab with faith groups
- diversity and inclusion training staff
Language - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affected + explanation:
1. English as additional language - hard for professional understand and therefore diagnose individual/ individual understand health info
2. speech and language impairments - difficult communicate symptoms and therefore diagnose illness
Ways to overcome:
- literature in other languages
- interpreters
- longer appointments
- advocates
- staff training + awareness of common speech and language difficulties
Geographical - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affected + explanation:
1. live in rural areas far from services: travel long way for appointments/ check ups
2. poor public transport links - irregular bus services mean not correspond to appointment times
Resources - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affected + Explanation:
1. can apply to anyone -
- staff shortages: eg in care home - missed medication, failure to notice changes in condition, higher risk of falls and accidents (lack of staff to help with movement)
- waiting lists: not receive care for long period of time.
Ways to overcome:
- pay to access private service providers
- online appointments
Financial - who affect, explain how it would affect, ways to overcome:
Who affected + Explanation:
1. single parent - need arrange childcare will at appointments result in missing appointments
2. regularly travelling to appointments - expensive parking mean hard to attend appointments
3. on benefits - not afford equipment eg mobility aids - worsen condition.
Ways to overcome:
- self help material on internet
- free class eg exercise or diet
- online appointments (don’t have to travel to appointments)
