Type of glandular metaplasia where squamous epithelium is replaced by metaplastic glandular columnar epithelium

Aetiology: What causes Barrett’s oesophagus?
A
Prolonged acid exposure in the distal oesophagus

Pathology: Describe the basic pathology of Barrett’s oesophagus.
A
Squamous epithelium is replaced by metaplastic glandular columnar epithelium containing goblet cells which secrete mucus in the lower oesophagus

Treatment: What is the treatment of Barrett’s oesophagus (high grade dysplasia)?
A
- Radio-frequency ablation (RFA)
- Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR)
- Oesophagectomy (rarely done)

- Oesophageal adenocarcinoma (occurs after dysplasia)
