A

Enterococcus

19
Q

Gram stain shows gram + cocci in pairs and short chains. PYR +, Beta hemolytic. Dx?

A

Streptococcus pyogenes

20
Q

Gram stain shows gram + cocci in pairs and short chains. PYR -, alpha hemolytic. Dx?

A

Streptococcus pneumoniae

21
Q

Gram stain shows gram + cocci in long chains, Catalase (‐), α‐ or ɣ‐ hemolytic. Dx?

A

Viridans Streptococcus

22
Q

Gram stain shows gram + cocci in long chains, Catalase (‐), beta hemolytic. Dx?

A

Groups B, C, F, G Streptococci

23
Q

What determines lance field groups?

A

Teichoic acid antigen.

24
Q

What do gram positive cocci in tetrads indicate on gram stain?

A

coagulase negative staphylococci or Micrococcus species

25
Q

What is the only PYR positive strep species?

A

Strep pyogenes

26
Q

Abiotrophia/Granulicatella require what to grow?

A

pyridoxal or cysteine

27
Q

What agar do Abiotrophia/Granulicatella grow on?

A

Chocolate agar

28
Q

What group is strep pneumonia a member of?

A

Streptococcus mitis

29
Q

What type of colonies do strep pneumonia form?

A

Donut shaped, raised edges, indented center

30
Q

What is the difference between Beta, alpha, and gamma hemolysis?

A

Beta - completely lyse RBCs leaving a clear zone of hemolysis around the colony
Alpha - incompletely lyse RBCs leaving greenish discoloration of the culture medium surrounding the colony
Gamma hemolytic - Do NOT hemolyze, AKA non-hemolytic

31
Q

What is the significance of optochin sensitivity?

A

Both Strep pneumonia and Strep viridian’s is alpha hemolytic. To differentiate this a disc inoculated with optochin is placed on the plate.
Strep pneumonia is inhibited
Strep viridans will grow

32
Q

What 5 groups of strep make up the virdans group?

A

mutans, anginosus (milleri), mitis, salivarius, bovis

–> Each group has multiple species in it.
