A
Bacteria overgrows and deconjugates bile salts due to stasis of intestinal contents as a result of functional (motility disorders) or surgical (surgical blind loop, diverticula, bowel infiltration)

Diagnosis (2)
A
1- Hydrogen breath test: abnormal early peak of hydrogen (early peak seen from small intestine bacterial overgrowth, normal late peak is normally seen from colonic flora)
2- Small intestine aspirate and fluid culture: gold standard

Treatment
A
Treated by antibiotics (tetracycline and metronidazole) and correction of underlying cause
