Background Flashcards
How was Charles related to Ferdinand and Isabella?
He was Juana and Philip Habsburg’s son, making him F&I’s grandson.
Explain the succession from Isabella to Charles.
- Isabella’s will left Castile to her eldest surviving daughter, Juana, however she had already shown signs of mental instability so she also stipulated that if she was unable to govern, Ferdinand would act as regent
- this was because she didn’t want Juana’s husband Philip to gain too much power however some Castilian nobles did not want this as they resented Aragonese officials in Castile
- In 1506, Ferdinand agreed to hand Castile over to Juana, or Philip in the case of her death
- When Philip died, Juana went mad and Ferdinand came back to govern until his death in 1516
- Cisneros then became regent for a 16 year old Charles
