Back pain Flashcards
back pain is the leading cause of disability for?
<45 years
what is the lifetime prevalence of back pain?
50%-80%
what are the major cause of back pain?
non-specific idiopathic lumbar sprain (70%); degenerative disk disease; disk herniation; osteoporosis; spinal stenosis
how many total vertebra are there?
7C; T12; L5; 5 sacral (fused); 4 coccygeal (fused)
what are the major components of the vertebrae:
Body; Pedicles; Facets; Lamina; Spinous and transverse processes
what composes a spinal segment?
The intervertebral disk; the vertebrae above and below that disc; spinal nerve
structures in the back that may cause back pain have to have what?
they must be capable of causing pain (innervating pain fibbers/sensors)
what are some biological changes that occur with disc degeneration? Specifically what happens to water content in the Nucleus pulposus?
It Decreases
what are some biological changes that occur with disc degeneration? Specifically what happens to collagen content in the Nucleus pulposus?
increase in collagen
disc degeneration occurs as a result of? And it results in?
Disc degeneration occurs as a result of intrinsic degradation and results in biomechanical changes which predispose to injury and pain
can you get a desk herniation with out the degeneration?
no degeneration is a necessary prerequisite for herniation
in a desk herniation what happens?
Generally Defect in the annulus allows the herniation of the nucleus; can be complete or partial (bulge or protrusion)
The symptoms of a herniated disk are due to?
injury to the annulus/disk (leads to back pain); pressure from the herniated disk on the nerve root (lead to neurological deficit); mechanical and biochemical stimulation of the spinal cord (leads to referred pain down the leg)
