Trapezius (Upper)

A

Origin: occipital bone

Insertion: lateral clavicle

Action:

  • bilaterally: extend the head and neck
  • unilaterally: laterally flex the head and neck to the same side, rotate head and neck to the opposite side, elevate and upwardly rotate the scapula

Nerve: spinal portion of the cranial nerve XI (accessory) and ventral ramus of C2, C3, and C4

Insertion: intertubcular groove of the humerus

A

Origin: Transverse processes of first through fourth cervical vertebrate

Insertion: medial border of the scapula, between the superior angle and superior portion of the spine of the scapula

Action:

  • unilaterally: elevates and downwardly rotate the scapula, laterally flex head and neck, rotate the head and neck to the same side
  • bilaterally: extend the head and neck

Nerve: cervical nerves 3 and 4, and dorsal scapular nerve C4 and C5
