B9- Resporation Flashcards
What is respiration
Is the release of energy from food
What’s the word equation for Aerobic respiration
Glucose + oxygen -> Energy + carbon dioxide + water
What’s the symbol equation for Aerobic respiration
C6 H12 O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What’s the name of that energy produced
ATP energy
Why do we need energy
Chemical reactions
active transport
control of body temperature
Protein synthesis
What are the two types of respiration
Aerobic respiration
Anaerobic respiration
What happens in Arabic respiration
Glucose is fully broken down
Requires oxygen
Releases loads of ATP energy (38 ARP)
What happens in anaerobic respiration
Glucose is not fully broken down
Doesn’t require oxygen/lack of O2
Releases a small amount of ATP (2 ATP)
What happens to our bodies during exercise
Our bodies require more oxygen and more glucose in order to respire more quickly this is because the muscles are working harder and faster
What are our bodies responses to exercise
Heart and lungs have to work harder therefore:
1) breathing rate increases-supplies more oxygen to the muscle and removes excess Carbon dioxide
2) heart rate increases-supplies blood to muscle this delivers more oxygen and glucose to the muscle
3) increases the rate of carbon dioxide and lactic acid removal from muscle
4) glycogen stored in the muscle is converted back to glucose to increase the rate of respiration
4) higher rate of respiration as more energy is needed
What’s the word equation for Anaerobic respiration in muscles
glucose -> lactic acid
What’s the word equation for Anaerobic respiration in plant and yeast cells
glucose -> ethanol + carbon dioxide
