B2 Cell Division Flashcards
Why does cell division happen
- Replace damaged cell
- To allow us to grow
- Repair damaged cell
- To produce sex cell (spem, egg cell)
What is the cell cycle
The cell cycle is the way the body makes more cells this happens in 3 stages
cell cycle stage 1
This is known as Interphase. In this stage the cell prepares itself to divide. The DNA is replicated ( doubled) and the organices (mitochondria and ribosomes make copies of them self’s the cell grows in size)
cell cycle stage 2
This is known as Mitosis. replicated chromosomes line up along the centre of the cell and get pulled to
opposite poles. Nucleus divides.
cell cycle stage 3
This is known as Cytokinesis: cell membrane and cytoplasm divide to form 2 new identical daughter cells.
What is a stem cell
An unspecialised cell, that can differentiate into many other cell types.
What are the advantages of Embryonic stem cells
Has the potential to develop into any type of cell/tissue.
Used to treat human diseases.
Painless
What are the advantages of Adult stem cells
Plentiful supply.
No ethical issues (in collection) as permission can be given.
Well tried/tested.
What are the disadvantages of Embryonic stem cells
Unethical – embryos cannot give permission. Possible harm/death to embryo.
What are the disadvantages of Adult stem cells
Painful to extract .
Fewer diseases can be treated.
Can only form the type of cells as the
tissue they were taken from.
