B9-Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system?
1) Maintains the body’s fluid balance by drainage of tissues
2) Part of the body’s immune system and an impact part in defence against infections
3) Transportation of some fats
Describe what a lymph is?
A lymph is a clear watery fluid that transports the plasma proteins that sweep out of the capillary beds back to the bloodstream
it also carries larger particles such as bacteria and cell debris from damaged tissues
What are lymph nodes
Lymph nodes are oval shaped organs that lie under the lymph vessels. The lymph drains through a series of nodes usually 8-10 before returning to the bloodstream.
The function-Lymph flows through nodes and is filtered some particle can be destroyed in the lymph nodes
What are lymph vessels
Lymphatic vessels have thin walls and valves. They push lymph from the lymph capillaries towards the heart and into the thoracic duct which empties into the main blood circulation.
What is the spleen?
The spleen is a reddish-purple organ which is a oval shape lying in the upper abdomen behind the stomach.
Site where antibodies can be produced so where the body can mount on the immune response.
Describe what is a Thymus gland?
The thymus gland consists of two lobes joined areolar tissues .It lies behind the sternum.
It produces mature lymphocytes.
Lymphocytes
Lymphocytes play a role in defending the body against invading microorganisms and abnormal cells such as cancer
It consists of T-cells and B-cells
T-cells?
T-cells are programmed in the thymus gland they recognise abnormal cells and destroy them with special chemicals.
B-cells ?
B-cells are programmed to recognise antigens. There are proteins on the surface of microorganism.
Macrophages and Phagocytosis
The particles commonly phagocytosed by white blood cells include bacteria, dead tissue cells
.
How does the lymphatic system work?
Lymph fluid normally flows through the network of lymph vessels that connect to group of lymph nodes,
Waste products and the destroyed bacteria are then carried in the lymph fluid back into the bloodstream and are removed from the body with other body waste
