B8-The endocrine system Flashcards
What is the overall function of the endocrine system?
The endocrine glands release hormones into the bloodstreams which lets them travel to the cells.
The endocrine hormones help control mood, growth, development the way our organs work and reproduction
What is The pituitary Gland?
1) The pituitary gland and the hypothalamus act as a unit regulating the activity of most of the other endocrine glands
2) It lies below the hypothalamus its consist of two main parts-glandular tissue secreting hormones and nervous tissue.
3) Controls growth, functions of sex organs osmoregulation
What is the thyroid gland
It is situated in the neck in front of larynx and trachea.
Thyroxine (T3) and Tri-iodothyronine (T4)-The release of these two hormones into the blood is stimulated by TSH(thyroid simulating hormone) which is released from the pituitary gland
What is the Adrenal glands?
1)The two adrenal glands are situated on the upper pole of the kidney the glands are made up of two parts which have different structure and functions.
This is the outer layer the cortex and the inner layer called the medulla. The cortex is essential but the medulla is not.
What’s is the Pancreas
Only 2% of pancreatic tissue has a endocrine function and this consists of clusters of cells known as pancreatic islets or Langerhans islets. These are scattered around the glands
What are the Ovaries
1) As growth of follicle cells surrounding the ovum increases, cells produce oestrogen.
2) Oestrogen-causes secondary characteristics to appear thickens the lining of the uterus
Why sis oestrogen important for women?
1) Keeps cholesterol in control
2) Protects bone health for both women and men
3) Affects your brain
What happens after ovulation
After ovulation the follicle forms the corpus luteum which secretes progesterone
What does progesterone do/
1) Progesterone makes the thickened and ready for the fertilised ovum(zygote) to be embedded
2) If the body conceives progesterone continues to stimulate the body to provide the blood vessels in the endometrium that will feed the growing foetus
Testes?
1) FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE (FSH) from the pituitary gland causes the testes to produce Androgens causing the seminiferous tubules to produce sperm and the supporting cells to secrete testosterone
What is Testosterone?
1) Testosterone is responsible for secondary sexual features and therefore (maleness )
