B10-Renal system Flashcards
What are the kidneys?
Kidneys are bean shaped organs. Most people have two on each side of the vertebral column just below the diaphragm.
Function-The kidneys form urine which passes to the bladder for the storage prior to excretion.
Each kidney holds millions units called nephrons, which are responsible for filtering blood to produce urine
What are the functions of kidneys
1) Fomration of urine
2) Excretion of waste products
2) Production and secretion of the hormone that stimulates red blood cell production
3)Production and secretion of RENIN,RENIN is a enzyme that is important in long term control of blood pressure
What is the formation of urine?
Urea is carried in the bloodstream to the kidneys.
The kidneys remove urea-waste product formed by breakdown of proteins-from the blood through small filtering units called nephrons
What are the Ureters?
They are slim tubes that leave the kidney and pass down the bladder to pelvis
What is the bladder?
The bladder is hallow organ that is roughly pear-shaped but becomes balloon shaped as it fills with urine
What is the function of the bladder
Stores urine until convenient time to get rid of it
Urethra
Urethra is a tube extending from the neck the bladder to the exterior It tends to be longer in makes than females.
The urethra is associated as the reproduction systems
What is the function of Urethra
A means of expelling the urine from the body
Micturition (The action of urination )
For micturition to occur the urethra sphincter muscle relaxes and muscular contractions occurs in the bladder walls .Forcing the out through the urethra.
What are Urinary Tract Infections ((UTIs)
UTIs occur when there is a bacteria entering urinary tract; they can affect the urethra, bladder or even kidneys
UTIs are mostly common in women, they can occur in men.
What can UTIs cause
a need to pee more often
pain or discomfort when peeing
sudden urges to pee
feeling as though you are unable to empty your bladder fully
Upper UTIs
Infections of the kidney
Lower UTIs
Infections of the bladder(cystitis) or urethra (that carries urine out of the body)
