B8: Photosynthesis Flashcards
where does the water for photosynthesis come from?
The water is absorbed from the soil and the plant through the roots, and is transported to the leaves in the xylem.
how does the carbon dioxide for photosynthesis get to the cells?
It enters leaves through the stomata.
how is a leaf adapted for photosynthesis?
Most leaves are broad, giving them a big surface area for light to fall on. Most leaves are thin so diffusion distances for the gases are short. They contain chlorophyll in the chloroplasts to absorb light.
What is the word equation for photosynthesis?
Water + carbon dioxide —> glucose + oxygen
how is the glucose produced during photosynthesis used?
Plants and algae use some of the glucose from photosynthesis to build up fats and oils. Plants often use fats and oils as an energy store in their seeds. Also, plants build up glucose into complex carbohydrates such as cellulose. Plants convert some of the glucose produced in photosynthesis into starch to be stored.
