B1: Diffusion and Osmosis and exchange Flashcards
1
Q
Why is diffusion important for cells?
A
Diffusion is important for cells because it helps us deliver nutrients and remove waste products.
2
Q
What are the factors that increase the rate of diffusion?
A
- Increase the concentration gradient (a bigger difference between the two areas).
- Temperature - the higher the temperature, the faster diffusion will be.
- The surface area of the exchange surface.
- Shorter diffusion distance.
3
Q
What is lysis?
A
the breaking down of the membrane of a cell
4
Q
What is crenation?
A
The shrinkage of cells
5
Q
Is diffusion up or down the concentration gradient?
A
It is down the concentration gradient
6
Q
Will the surface area to volume ratio be larger or smaller, the smaller the organism?
A
It would be larger
