Non-communicable diseases
Cannot spread between organisms and generally last for a long time and get worse slowly
What is cancer
A non-communicable disease caused by uncontrolled growth and cell division.
What is a tumour
A mass of cells that grow in an abnormal way and are caused by uncontrolled cell division
Benign tumour
This grows until theres no more room in the membrane. They do not invade other parts of the body. Isn’t cancerous and isn’t normally dangerous.
Risk factors that increase the rate of disease
Aspects of a persons lifestyle (exercise, alcohol and drugs, smoking, obesity, diet, exposure to carcinogens). Substances in the persons body or environment (age, genes you inherit from parents).
Risk factors of alcohol
Can damage the liver and cause cirrhosis and liver cancer. Can cause brain damage and death
What is a carcinogen
A substance that causes cancer
What can obesity cause
Type 2 diabetes
Effect of smoking
Lung disease and lung cancer. (Bronchitis)Cardiovascular diseases. (Coronary heart disease)
What does Nicotine do
Relaxes body but is addictive
What does carbon monoxide do
Poisonous gas that reduces oxygen level in blood causing shortness of breath in exercise
What is tar
Sticky substance that accumulates in the lungs causing cancer
