B16 Ecology Flashcards
Abiotic factors
Non living factors of the enviroment
Biotic
Living factors of the community
Habitat
The place where an organism lives
Abiotic factors that affect the community
Light intensity, soil ph and mineral content, wind intensity and direction, Carbon dioxide level, oxygen level, moisture level, temperature
Biotic factors that affect the community
New predators, interspecific competition, new pathogens, food availability
Population
This is the organisms of the same species that share particular habitat.
Interdependant
A word that describes how organisms rely on and impact upon each other.
Community
This is made up of all the organisms that share a particular habitat.
Species
This is a group of organisms that can breed together to produce fertile offspring
Competition
A word that describes the fact that organisms often need the same resources
What resources do animals compete for?
Food, water, territory, mates
What resources do plants compete for?
Water, sunlight, mineral ions, nutrients, space
What are extremophiles?
These are microorganisms adapted to live in extreme conditions- ph, temperature, salt concentration, high pressure
What is a structural Adaptation
This is something that relates to the organisms physical structure (shape, colour)
What is Behavioural adaptation
The ways organisms behave short and long term
