B6.5-6 Monoclonal Antibodies And Their Uses Flashcards
How are MAB’s made ?
Lymphocytes make specific antibodies but do not divide are combined with tumour cells that divide
Makes a hybrodoma cell
The cells are cloned
Monoclonal antibodies are made
Why are Hybridoma cells made?
Lymphocytes don’t divide but tumours do so it makes clones
What are four uses of MAB’s to help treat cancer ?
-Target drugs- carry toxic drugs to stop cancer cells growing but does not damage healthy cells
-Tagging with dyes
-Blocking receptors involved in cell division- stops growth of cells
-Attracting the immune system- recognise, attach and destroy cancer cells
What are two other uses of MABs?
Pregnancy tests
HCG, if present it produces a colour change
measuring and monitoring blood hormone levels
Mentors the levels in hormones and tests athletes
What are two pros and two cones of MAB’s?
Pros
Can help treat cancer
Harmless production
Cons
Very expensive to develop
Initially created more side effects than expected
