B6.1 Vaccines Flashcards
How do vaccines work?
A dead or inactive form of a pathogen is injected
White blood cells produce the secured antibodies needed
Antibodies can be made faster upon future infection providing IMUNNITY
What is herd immunity ?
When the spread of a disease is reduced when a large majority of the population is immune to a disease
Resulting in less people being able to spread the disease
Describe 3 differences between initial and secondary exposure ?
Antibodies are produced quicker in secondary exposure
More antibodies are produced in secondary exposure
The antibody concentration remains higher for longer in secondary response
What are the pros and cons of vaccines
Pros
Allows me the right antibodies to be produced faster
Protection form both bacterial and viral diseases
Immunity
Protects unvaccinated people as well (herd immunity)
Cons
Requires an injection
Requires a visit to the doctor which takes time
Side effects
Ethics
Often needs repeating
