B5.1-2 Health, Non Communicable Disease And Reducing Spread Flashcards
What is health
The state of physical and mental well being
What is disease ?
Conditions that can cause Ill health
What are the two types of diseases ? Give definitions for each one
Communicable: spread from person to person, also called infectious diseases and can be caused by Viruses, Bacteria and fungi (Pathogens)
Non communicable: cannot be spread like diabetes or asthma
How does a weak immune system cause disease or illness ?
Your immune system helps you destroy pathogens, if there is a defect in it the immune system may not work properly causing the person to be more prone to suffer with communicable diseases
How do virus’s and cancer interact ? (Think type of virus and what it does)
HPV can cause cervical cancer in women however most women in the UK have a vaccine for this.
How does bad health either mental or physical cause illness ?
Severely bad physical health can lead to depression and other mental illness this is especially prone when one’s physical health is so bad it effects normal activities
How do allergic reactions and pathogens interact?
Immune reactions initially caused by pathogens can trigger allergies to factors in the environment. These allergies can cause asthma, hives or rashes
What are pathogens ?
Microorganisms that can cause diseases
Some of them are Bacteria, Viruses, Protists and fungi
How can we stop the spread of Pathogens ?
Hygiene: washing hands and cleaning cooking items
Kill vectors: insecticides which kill the vectors
Vaccination:
Isolate infected individuals: stops spread and controls contamination
What are the three ways in which Pathogens can spread?
By air: carried and spread from one organism to another in the air like flu or the common cold
Direct contact: spread by direct contact of an infected organism with a health one eg STDs or plant diseases
Water: pathogen enters your body via your digestive system through contaminated water diseases like cholera
Factors that can affect health ? 3 different ones
Balanced diet: the body need right amount of nutrients to perform its functions
Stress- can affect mental health, and weaken immune response
Life situation- medical care, Economic status and food availability
Modes of transmission for pathogens?
Droplets
Physical contact
Water
Vector
Mother to child
