B5 muscular system Flashcards
function of muscular system
Skeletal muscles attached to bones
Work in pairs to produce movement
Tendons connect bone to muscles
One contracts, the other relaxes to allow movement
types of contractions
concentric
eccentric
isometric
Concentric
Shortening of muscles
eg- bicep curl upwards
Eccentric
lengthening of muscles
eg- bicep curl downward
isometric
Muscles doesn’t change length
eg- holding weight
Agonist
Prime movers are the main activating muscles
Antagonist
Work as a pair with the agonist. As one contracts, the other relaxes to allow
movement
Synergist
Works to assist agonist or antagonist muscles
Fixator
Muscles that keep bones stable so agonist can work properly
muscular dystrophy
conditions that gradually cause the muscles to weaken, leading to an increasing level of disability
progressive condition, which means it gets worse over time
