Antibody
A protein produced by white blood cells in response to a foreign substance being in the body
Antitoxin
An antibody produced in response to a bacterial toxin
Antiviral drugs
A drug that kills or inhibits viruses and is used to treat viral infections
Disease
A disorder which affects a living organism. It has a specific cause and can be recognised by particular signs and symptoms
Immune response
The response of the immune system to cells carrying foreign antigens. It results in the production of antibodies against the foreign cells and the destruction of those cells
Immunity
The way in which white blood cells and the antibodies that some of them produce, enable the body to combat infection
Infection
The invasion of any living organism by disease-causing microorganisms which produce various symptoms in their host
Lymphocyte
A type of white blood cell formed in the lymph nodes and play an important role in the body’s defence mechanisms
Pathogens
Microorganism that cause disease
Penicillin
A specific type of antibiotic
Phagocytosis
The process by which foreign particles invading the body are engulfed and broken down by phagocytes
Protist
A kingdom into which all organisms of simple biological organisations are classified
Toxin
A poison produced by a living organism, especially a bacterium
