B12 - Homeostasis in action Flashcards
ADH
A hormone secreted by the pituitary gland that stimulates absorption of water by the kidneys and thus controls the concentration of body fluids.
Delaminating
The breakdown of an amino acid in the liver when there is an excess of amino acids (from proteins). This forms urea which is removed from the body as urine.
Dialysis
The process of cleansing the blood through a dialysis machine when the kidneys have failed.
Exhalation
The process by which gas is expelled from the lungs.
Pituitary gland
Small gland in the brain which produces a range of hormones controlling body functions.
Thermoregulatory centre
The area of the brain which is sensitive to the temperature of the blood.
Thyroxine
The main hormone secreted by the thyroid gland.
Urea
The waste product formed by the breakdown of excess amino acids in the liver.
Vasoconstriction
The reduction in the internal diameter of blood vessels to reduce the loss of heat from the body.
Vasodilation
The increase in the internal diameter of blood vessels to increase the loss of heat from the body.
