B3.4 Catalysts And Enzymes Flashcards
1
Q
What are the rate of chemical reactions controlled by?
A
Enzymes
2
Q
What are enzymes?
A
Special biological catalysts (catalysts speed up reactions) that speed up reactions.
3
Q
What are enzymes made out of?
A
Long chains of amino acids which are folded to produce a molecule with an active site
4
Q
What is an active site?
A
A unique shape on the enzyme which contacts the substrate and binds to a specific molecule. An enzyme can still work again after a reaction.
5
Q
How do enzymes work?
A
Substrate fits with active sight
Substate splits into products which leave the active site
(Think of it like a lock and key)
6
Q
What do enzymes control?
A
Metabolism - sum of all reactions of cells in the body
