What is the digestive system and example of?
An organ system
Function of mouth
Chops and grinds food into smaller pieces (enzymes from the saliva is released and breaks down even more). Saliva is produced by the salivary glands.
Function of Gullet (oesophagus)
Muscular tube that contracts to force food down
Function of stomach
Muscular organ where digestion continues. Acid is used (most likely pH2) to digest the food.
Function of Pancreas
Produces digestive enzymes
Function of liver
Produces bile. Bile breaks down fats in to fatty acids and glycerol.
Function of gall bladder
Stores bile before releasing it into the small intestine
Function of small intestine - iduodenum
Where food is mixed with digestive enzymes and bile
Function of Small intestine - ileum
Where digested food is absorbed into the blood and lymph
Function of Large intestine - colon
Where water is reabsorbed
Function of Large intestine - rectum
Where faeces are stored
Function of rectum
Holds poo
Function of anus
Where poo is released
