What is thyroxine?
A hormone produced in the thyroid gland
What does thyroxine do?
Play a vital role in regulating the body’s metabolic rate
What is a metabolic rate?
The speed at which the body transfers energy from chemical stores in order to perform its functions
What is the function of the thyroid gland?
To take iodine and convert it into thyroxine
What does the thyroid gland combine iodine with to convert it into thyroxine?
Tyrosine (an amino acid)
Where does the thyroid gland get iodine from?
Food
Where are the adrenal glands?
Near your kidneys
What do the adrenal glands secrete?
Adrenaline
What does adrenaline do?
Prepares the body for intensive action
What is negative feedback?
An important type of control that is used in homeostasis
What are the steps of negative feedback?
Corrective mechanisms switched off -> Conditions in the body change from set point -> Change detected by a receptor -> Corrective mechanisms activated by an effector -> Conditions returned to set point
What does thyroxine control?
How much energy is available to cells
What does the hypothalamus cause the pituitary gland to do when in need of more energy?
It causes the pituitary gland to release TSH
What is TSH?
thyroid-stimulating-hormone
What does TSH do?
Stimulate the thyroid gland to release thyroxine
