B3 - Organisation and the digestive system Flashcards
What is the definition of a tissue
A group of similar cells working together to carry out a function
What is the definition of a organ
A group of different tissues working together to carry out a process
What are the 3 types of tissue
Musclar tissue - can contact and relax
Glandular tissue - can excrete substances
Epithelial tissue - protects organs
What is the function of the stomach
To churn up the food and break it down using enzymes
What is the function of the pancreas
It makes the enzymes that break down the food
What is the function of the liver
To produce bile
What is the function of the small intestine
Absorbing nutrients
What is the function of the large intestine
Absorbing water
Carbohydrates What are they made of? What do they do? Some examples What enzyme breaks them down
Made up of simple sugars
Provide us with energy
E.g. Bread, rice and pasta
Amylase enzyme is used to break it down - in the mouth and small intestine
Lipids What are they made of? What do they do? Some examples What enzyme breaks them down
Made up of fatty acids
Provide us with energy
E.g. Oil, butter and cheese
Lipase enzyme breaks it down - small intestine
Protein What are they made of? What do they do? Some examples What enzyme breaks them down
Made up of amino acids
Used for making cells, enzymes, antibodies and hormones
E.g. fish, cheese and pulses
Protease enzyme breaks it down - in the stomach and small intestine
Test for Carbohydrates
Iodine test for starch - yellow turns to blue/black
Benedicts test for sugars - blue turns brick red if heated
Test for Protein
Biuret test - blue turns purple
Test for Lipids
Ethanol test - added to the solution will turn cloudy white
What is an enzyme
Biological catalyst
Made of protein
Uses the lock and key method
