Q

How is a higher blood glucose level dealt with

A

Detected by the pancreas
Pancreas secretes insulin into the blood
This causes the cells to take up glucose
It is stored as glycogen in the liver and muscle cells

Q

How is a lower blood glucose level dealt with

A

Detected by the pancreas
Pancreas secretes glucagon
In liver cells, glycogen is broken down into glucose and released into the blood

10
Q

What is adrenaline

A

It is the ‘fight or flight’ hormone which is released when you are stressed, frightened or angry
It is not controlled by negative feedback
It increases heart rate and increases the delivery of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles

Q

What does FSH do

A

It causes the egg to mature in the ovary

It stimulates the production of Oestrogen

17
Q

What does Oestrogen do

A

Stimulates the build up of the lining of the uterus
Stimulates the production of LH
Inhibits the production of FSH

18
Q

What does LH do

A

Causes the egg to be released from the ovary

Inhibits the production of FSH

19
Q

What does Progesterone do

A

Maintains the lining of the uterus

Inhibits the production of LH

20
Q

What happens in the IVF process

A

Women given FSH and LH to stimulate eggs
Eggs are collected and fertilised by sperm
Fertilised eggs develop into embryos
When they are balls of cells 1 or 2 embryos are inserted into the womb

21
Q

What are the advantages of IVF

A

People can have babies
Screened for diseases
Used embryos for stem cell research

22
Q

What are the disadvantages of IVF

A

Open to misuse in the future
Stressful
Multiple births
People disagree with embryos being created and destroyed

23
Q

What is a tropism

A

It is a growth in response to a stimulus

24
Q

What is phototropism

A

Growth in response to light
Shoots will grow towards the light
Positive phototropism

25
Q

What is Gravitropism

A

Growth in response to gravity
Shoots grow against gravity - negative gravitropism
Roots grow down with gravity - positive gravitropism

26
Q

What is Auxin

A

A plant hormone which can be used as a selective weed killer, rooting powders for cuttings, and growing plants from cells in tissue culture

27
Q

What is Gibberellins

A

A plant hormone which stimulates seeds to germinate at times of the year when they wouldn’t, and increase fruit size, promotes flowering

28
Q

What is Ethene

A

Stimulates fruit ripening
