B2.2.4 - Plant Transport Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Plants’ two transport systems
A
Xylem and phloem
2
Q
What does the xylem do?
A
Xylem tissue transports water and mineral ions from roots into whole plant
- water diffuses into roots (osmosis)
- mineral ions taken in (active transport)
3
Q
What does the phloem do?
A
Phloem tissue transports dissolved sugars (from photosynthesis) and other (soluble) food moles.
- known as translocation
4
Q
What is a vascular bundle?
A
The xylem and phloem tissue formed as a structure
5
Q
Explain the xylem structure
A
- made of dead xylem cells w no cell walls
- thickened cellulose for support
- one way only
- lignin stiffens the walls
6
Q
Explain the phloem structure
A
- living cells
- cell walls down break down fully
- sieve plates form w small holes, for sugar to go through
- two way flow
7
Q
How do vascular bundles provide support?
A
- In leaf: network forms supporting softer tissue
- In stem: located around outer edge, preventing stem bending in wind
- In root: central, roots act as anchor, bending in wind
