B1.4.1 - Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is photosynthesis?
Process used by plants to make their own food
What kind of reaction is photosynthesis?
An endothermic reaction, meaning it takes IN energy from surroundings
What is the food source and the waste product produced?
Food source - Glucose
Waste product - Oxygen
How does carbon dioxide enter the plant?
Diffuses from air in the plant through the stomata (guard cells)
How does water enter the plant?
Enters roots from soil through root hair cells by osmosis
Where does photosynthesis occur?
In the chloroplasts
What are the 2 main stages
One is light dependant
The second is light independent
Describe the light dependant stage
Energy transferred from light splits water molecules into oxygen gas and hydrogen ions
Describe the light independent stage
Carbon dioxide gas combines with hydrogen ions to make glucose
What happens to the glucose produced? State 3.
1) Some used immediately for respirations
2) Others converted to sugar molecules (fructose, surcrose, etc)
3) Converted to starch for respiring at night
4) Make cellulose (forms cell wall), proteins (growth and repair), fat and oils
