b12 Flashcards
what is body temperature controlled by
thermoregulatory system in the brain which detects temperature in blood
what happens if the core body temperature rises
blood vessels near the skin dilate allowing more blood to flow through the skin capillaries
sweat glands produce more sweat so you should drink more
what happens when the core body temperature falls
blood vessels near the surface of the skin constrict and less blood flows through the skin capillaries
you shiver
how are amino acids removed from the body
in thew liver the amino group is removed from amino acids in deamination. this forms ammonia which is then converted to urea and passes in the blood to the kidneys to be excreted
what do the kidneys do
filter blood, excreting substances the body does not need and keeping those it does need
how does a healthy kidney produce urine
first filtering the blood
reabsorbing all the glucose
reabsorbing all dissolved mineral ions needed
reabsorbing all the sweater needed
releasing urea, water and excess ions in urine
what is it Called when the kidney reabsorbs a substance
selective reabsorption
what hormone is released if water content of the blood is too low
ADH
how does ADH work
released from the pituitary gland which causes the kidneys to reabsorb more water resulting in more urine
what does ADH to the kidney tubules
changes the permeability of them
what is the purpose of dialysis
to carry out the same function as the kidneys
how does dialysis work
blood flows between partially permeable membranes surrounded by dialysis fluid
urea diffuses out of the blood into the dialysis fluid
what does dialysis fluid contain
same concentration of useful substances such as glucose and mineral ions
where can a donor kidney come from
a victim of fatal accident or sometimes from a living donor
what must the donor kidney be
a very good tissue match so it isn’t rejected
the recipients antibodies may attack the antigens on the donor because they see it as foreign
