B1///3 Flashcards
What is osmosis
Is the diffusion of water across a partially permeable membrane .
What does isotonic mean
If the two solutions in osmosis have the same concentrations
What does hypertonic mean
The solution is more concentrated
What does hypotonic mean
The solution is more dilute
What happens to animal cells if the concentration outsidr changes dramatically
They can be damaged
What is turgor
Pressure exerted by fluid in a cell that presses the cell membrane against the cell wall
What happens to plant cells In a hypertonic solution
They become flaccid so plant wilts as a result of lack of water
What is plasmolysis
Plant cells in a hypertonic solution lose a lot of water so cytoplasm and vacuole shrink
What is active transport
The movement of particles from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution against a concentration gradient
Give an example of active transport
roots absorb water and minerals through active transport
What happens to the SÃ:V ratio as an organism increases
It decreases
how can we measure osmosis
use a cork borer to make three potato cylinders and measure the length and mass of them. place each cylinder into a test tube two with different concentrations of sugar and one with distilled water.
