B1.1 Cells - Animal, plant and bacterial cells Flashcards
Animal Cell
Type of cell with a nucleus, cell membrane and mitochondria but no chloroplasts or cell wall
Plant cell
Type of cell with a nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, chloroplasts, a cell wall and a permanent vacuole
Bacterial cell
A cell type with a cell wall but no nucleus, where the genetic material is free within the cytoplasm and sometimes within plasmids
Cell membrane
Controls the entry of substances into and outside of the cell, found in animal, plant and bacterial cells
Nucleus
Contains genetic material in an animal or plant cell
Ribosomes
Where protein synthesis takes place
Cytoplasm
A jelly-like substance that contains organelles and is where chemical reactions take place, found in bacteria, plants and animals
Mitochondria
Where cellular respiration takes place in animal and plant cells
Permanent vacuole
Space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap found in plant cells
Plant cell wall
Outside later of cellulose which strengthens and supports plant and algal cells
Bacterial cell wall
An outer layer of bacterial cells that, unlike plant cells, is not made of cellulose
Plasmids
Small rings of extra DNA found in bacterial cells
Chloroplasts
Contains chlorophyll and is where photosynthesis takes place in plant cells
Chlorophyll
A green pigment found in the chloroplast that absorbs light energy used to carry out photosynthesis
DNA loop
A single molecule of DNA that is found free in the cytoplasm of bacterial cells
