B1 - different types of muscle Flashcards
1
Q
How many muscles are there in the human body?
A
- 640
2
Q
What are the three different types of muscle?
A
- skeletal muscle (voluntary)
- cardiac muscle
- smooth muscle (involuntary)
3
Q
What is striated tissue?
A
- muscle tissue in which the contractile fibres in the cells are aligned in parallel bundles. so that their different regions form stripes visible in a microscope
- muscles of this type are attached to the skeleton by tendons and are under voluntary control
4
Q
What are skeletal muscles?
A
- voluntary muscle
- ‘striated’ or ‘striped’ muscle
- these muscles are controlled by us
- they are essential for any form of movement (critical for sport and exercise)
- attached to the skeletal system via tendons and through contractions and pulling motions creates movement
- skeletal muscles can become fatigued during the exercise
5
Q
What are cardiac muscles?
A
- only found in the wall of your heart
- this works continuously until you die
- it is involuntary meaning you don’t consciously control it
- it is composed of a special type of striated tissue that has its own blood supply
- it’s contractions help to force blood through the heart and blood vessels to different parts of the body
- each contraction and relaxation of the heart muscle counts as 1 heart beat
- cardiac muscle never fatigues
6
Q
What are smooth muscles?
A
- an involuntary muscle that works without conscious thoughts
- this works under the control of the nervous system
- it is located in the walls of the digestive system and bloods vessels
- helps to regulate blood pressure and digestion
7
Q
What is the nervous system?
A
- the network of nerve cells and fibres which transmits nerve impulses between parts of the body
