A4+5 Responses to the skeletal systems Flashcards
1
Q
What are the responses of the skeletal system split into?
A
- short-term (immediate)
- long-term (over a period of time)
2
Q
What is a response of short-term affects?
A
- acute responses
3
Q
What is a response of long-term affects?
A
- adaptations or chronic responses
4
Q
Acute responses …
A
- when the body makes an immediate change or response
5
Q
Chronic responses …
A
- adaptations that take place over a long period of time
6
Q
Why is it essential to to complete a thorough warm up in order to give the skeletal system time to produce the following…?
A
- increase in synovial fluid at the joints (to give extra lubrication and protect the joint capsule)
- the synovial fluid becomes less ‘viscous’ and the range of movement at the joint will increase as a result
- this will provide increased nutrients to the articular cartilage
- increased uptake of mineral within the bones
- the body will absorb minerals like calcium in order to develop bone strength
- a bone becomes stronger and denser the more you put demands on it
7
Q
What are examples of acute responses?
A
- breathing rate increase, heart rate increase, increased blood pressure and sweating
8
Q
What are the chronic responses?
A
- adaptations that lead to improved fitness for sports participation and reduced health risk
- exercise will increase bone density (less likely to fracture)
- long-term physical activity leads to developed ligament strength (and elasticity) resulting in increased flexibility
