What are the divisions of the bones of the skull?
The neurocranium and viscerocranium
What are the bones of the neurocranium?
Parietal, ethmoid, frontal, occipital, temporal, and sphenoid
What are the bones of the viscerocranium?
Zygomatic, lacrimal, nasal, vomer, inferior nasal conchae, mandible, maxilla and palatine
What are the joints of the skull?
Fibrous joints called sutures
When do each fontanelles close?
Anterior- 2-2.5yrs
Posterior - 3months
Posterolateral - 1yrs
What is the suture that splits the frontal bone until 7yo?
Metopic suture
What is the temporomandibular joint?
Synovial, modified hinge joint
Articulation: mandibular fossa, articular tubercle of temporal bone and mandibular condyle
Movements: elevation, depression, protrusion and retraction
What splits the temporomandibular joint into superior and inferior articular cavities?
Fibrocartilaginious disc
What are the ligaments of the temporomandibular joint?
Lateral ligament, sphenomandibular ligament and stylomandibular ligaments
