A5 Flashcards
What are the three trigeminal nuclei?
Chief - Touch and Pressure
Mesencephalic - proprioception
Spinal - Pain and Temperature
What is the function and route of CN I?
Smell
Nasal mucosa > cribiform plate of ethmoid bone > olfactory bulb > primary olfactory cortex
What is the function and route of CN II?
Vision
Retina > optic canal > chiasm > optic tract > LGN > optic radiation > visual cortex
What is the function and route of CN III?
Motor for LPS, IO, SR, IR and MR
Ventral midbrain > diaphragmatic sellae > cavernous sinus > superior orbital fissure
What is the function and route of CN IV?
motor for SO
Dorsal midbrain > tentorium cerebelli > cavernous sinus > superior orbital fissure
What is the function and route of CN V?
Sensory to face and tongue; and motor to muscles of mastication
Pons > middle cranial fossa > three branches exist at: V1 - SO fissure; V2 - IO fissure; V3 - foramen ovale
What is the function and route of CN VI?
Motor to LR
Pontinomedullary junction > dura mater > cavernous Sinus > SO Fissure
What is the function and route of CN VII?
Motor to facial expression and sensory for taste in ant. 2/3 of tongue
Pons-medullary junction > posterior cranial fossa > internal auditory meatus > stylomastoid foramen
What are the branches of the Facial nerve?
Temporal
Zygomatic
Bucal
Mandibular
Cervical
What is the function and route of CN VIII?
Auditory and equilibrium
Pons-Medullary junction > posterior cranial fossa > internal auditory meatus > split into vestibular and cochlear nerves
What is the function and route of CN IX?
Swallowing reflex, sensory to post. 1/3 tongue, gag reflex, parotid gland
Lateral aspect of medulla > posterior cranial fossa > jugular foramen
What is the function and route of CN X?
Structures of head, neck, thorax and abdomen
Lateral aspect of medulla > posterior cranial fossa > jugular foramen > carotid sheath of the neck >abdomen at oesophageal hiatus of diaphragm
What is the function and route of CN XI?
Sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
Upper 6 segments of spinal cord > foramen magnum to unite with cranial root > posterior cranial fossa > jugular foramen
What is the function and route of CN XII?
Motor to muscles of the tongue
Medulla between pyramid and olives > posterior cranial fossa > hypoglossal canal > passes through mylohyoid and hypoglossus muscle > lateral to genioglossus muscle
