B)Inhibitors of peptidoglycan antibiotics Flashcards
beta lactam antibiotics structure
all contains beta lactam ring
fn of beta lactam antibiotics
bind to enzymes involved in the crosslinking of peptidoglycan eg transpeptidase
beta lactamases are
group of enzyme that hydrolyze beta lactam ring. this destroys the fn of these rings
MRSA methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus
resistant to beta lactam antibiotics including methicillin. results in hard to treat infections. due to mecA which encodes an altered transpeptidase
describe structure vancomycin structure
isolated from bacteria. large complex structure including peptide and disaccharide
how does vancomycin work
too large to cross OM gram -ive. in gram +ive binds to d-ala d-aka of pentapeptide and prevents transcription
vancomycin is used for
treatment of MRSA infections. last resort
describe vancomycin resisitance
plasmid encoded VanA. VanA binds to inside of PM, it is a d-ala d-ala ligase. synthesizes various peptides that replace the d-ala d-ala, making it no longer a target for vancomycin
