Antibiotic Bacterial Drugs A)Introduction Flashcards
define antibiotic
compounds produced by fungi or bacteria that kill/inhibit growth of other org. term includes semi synthetic and synthetic drugs also
about 1/2 of antibiotics are secreted by bacteria eg
Streptomyces and a few Bacillus
Antibiotic spectrum-narrow spectrum targets and eg
limited amount of bacteria. penicillin targets gram +ive bacteria
broad spectrum targets and eg
most bacteria. eg Tetracycline
selective toxicity goals
to target bacteria w/as little harm to host as possible
bacterial targets include
gram -ive OM, peptidoglycan, peptidoglycan synthesis, 70S ribosome, nucleic acid synthesis, and bacterial specific metabolise pathway
antibiotic resistance occurs when
bacteria produce enzyme that destroys drugs, alter permeability of drug. alter target of the drug and can’t bind. Efflux bacteria pump drug out before it can reach target
