B-13+14 Breeding Flashcards
What is variation
Variation is the difference in characteristics in individuals in a population
What is evolution
Evolution is the change in a species over time and their inherited characteristics .
What is natural selection
Natural selection is a theory of evolution in which the animals with the most adapted features will reproduce to create more adapted children. Survival of the fittest
What is selective breeding
Selective breeding is the process by which humans breed plants and animals for particular genetic characteristics
What are the steps of genetic breeding
1- choose the parents with desirable characteristics from a mixed population
2- breed the two parents together
3- from the offspring choose those with desirer characteristics and breed them together
4- repeat until all offspring have desired characteristic
What are some advantages of selective breeding
- can produce animals or plants with desired characteristics
- can produce new variety if crops
- can increase yield and thus profit
- can create domesticated animals
