Axilla and Brachial Plexus Flashcards
What are the borders of the Axilla?
- Base: Skin of the armpit
- Anterior: Pectoralis Major, Pectoralis Minor and Subclavius
- Medial Wall: Serratus Anterior and Thoracic Wall
- Posterior: Theres Major, Teres Minor, Latissimus Dorsi and Subscapularis Muscles
- Lateral: Intertubercular groove on the humerus
What are the contents of the Axilla?
- Axillary Artery
- Brachial Plexus
- Axillary Vein
- Axillary Lymph Nodes
- Tendons of Biceps Brachii and Coracobrachialis
What are the 3 parts of the Axillary Artery and what separates them?
They are separated by Pectoralis Minor.
- Medial to Pectoralis Minor
- Behind Pectoralis Minor
- Between Pectoralis Minor and the Lateral Border of Teres Major
What are the branch(es) of the 1st part of the Axillary Artery?
Superior Thoracic Artery
What are the branches of the 2nd part of the Axillary Artery?
- Lateral Thoracic Artery
2. Thoracoacromial Artery
What are the branches of the 3rd part of the Axillary Artery?
- Posterior Circumflex Humeral Artery
- Anterior Circumflex Humeral Artery
- Subscapular Artery
Where does the Axillary Vein drain into?
The Subclavian Vein
What are the groups of Axillary Lymph Nodes?
- Apical
- Central
- Anterior
- Lateral
- Posterior
What are the borders of the Quadrangular Space?
- Inferior Margin of Teres Minor
- Surgical neck of Humerus
- Superior Margin of Teres Major
- Lateral Margin of the Long Head of Triceps
What goes through the Quadrangular Space?
- Axillary Nerve
2. Posterior Circumflex Artery
What are the borders of the Triangular Interval?
- Shaft of the Humerus
- Inferior Margin of Teres Major
- The Lateral Margin of the Long Head of Triceps
What is the hierarchy of the Brachial Plexus?
Roots–> Trunks–> Divisions–> Cords–> Branches
What are the roots of the Brachial Plexus?
C5, C6, C7, C8, T1
What Nerves branch of the roots of the Brachial Plexus?
- Long Thoracic Nerve of Bell from C5, C6, C7
- Contribution to Phrenic Nerve from C5
- Dorsal Scauplar Nerve from C5
What Injuries can there be to the roots of the Brachial Plexus?
- Erb’s/ Erb-Duchenne Palsy–> Waiter’s Tip, Injury to C5,C6
- Klumpke’s Paralysis–> “Claw Hand”, Injury to T1
What are the Trunks of the Brachial Plexus and where are they from?
- Superior (from C5,C6)
- Middle (from C7)
- Inferior (From C8, T1)
What Nerves branch off the trunks of the Brachial Plexus?
- Suprascapular Nerve and Nerve to Subclavius both branch off the superior trunk
How many divisions does each trunk of the Brachial Plexus have?
2- Anterior and Posterior
What are the Cords of the Brachial Plexus and where are they from?
- Lateral (From the Anterior divisions of the Superior and Middle Trunk)
- Posterior (From the Posterior divisions of all 3 trunks)
- Medial (from the Anterior division of the Inferior trunk)
What are the branches of the Lateral Cord of the Brachial Plexus?
- Lateral Root of the Median Nerve
- Lateral Pectoral Nerve
- Musculocutaneous Nerve
What are the branches of the Posterior Cord of the Brachial Plexus?
- Upper Subscapular Nerve
- Thoracodorsal Nerve
- Axillary Nerve
- Radial Nerve
- Lower Subscapular Nerve
