Avian Hematology (ATE2639L) Flashcards
Venipuncture
Weight and health determine how much can be drawn
* no symptoms: 1% of body weight can be drawn
* symptoms: 0.5% of body weight can be drawn
Venipuncture Sites
Jugular
* featherless area on neck
* use right side (larger)
Ulnar / Brachial
* crosses ventral surface of elbow joint
Medial Metatarsal
* medial side of lower leg
* preferred site for waterfowl and chickens
Avian PCV
- Normal is 35-55%
- Plasma color is slightly icteric
Avian TP
Normal generally 3-6 g/dL
* varies with age
* <2.3 g/dL is very poor prognosis
WBC Estimate
- Count average WBC number on 40x field
- Multiply average by 1600
Avian RBC
Regeneration Signs
Best signs of Regeneration
* polychromasia
* rubricytes
Thrombocytes
* do not call them platelets in birds
Thrombocytes
Normal Range
Adequate number is 1-2 / OIF
* clumping normal
Avian Heterophils
- Correspond to neutrophils
- Most common WBC in birds
- Round cell, colorless cytoplasm
- Brick red / rod shaped granules
- 2-3 lobed nucleus
Avian Heterophil
Avian Eosinophils
- Round cell, light blue cytoplasm
- Granule size varies with species, but will be uniform within same patient
- Granules brighter than heterophils
Avian Eosinophil
Avian Basophils
- Small round cell
- Centrally located nucleus
- Nucleus often hidden by granules
- Granules are deeply basophilic
- Cytoplasm (if seen) is colorless to light purple/red
Avian Basophil
Avian Monocytes
- Largest WBC
- Irregular cell size
- Bilobed or round nucleus
- Blue grey cytoplasm; granular appearance
- +/- vacuoles
