Avascular Necrosis (hip) Flashcards
what is one of the commonest sites for AVN
hip
what are some secondary causes for AVN
alcohol abuse, steroids, hyperlipidaemia, thrombophilia
how do patients tend to present
groin pain
what might be the only way to see early cases of AVN
MRI
what do later cases of AVN show
patchy sclerosis of weight bearing area of femoral head with a lytic zone underneath formed by granulation tissue from attempted repair
what do later changes of AVN give rise to on xray which is a classical sign
hanging rope sign
what causes femoral head collapse
irregularity of articular surface and subsequent secondary OA
if the condition is detected early enough (pre-collapse) what can be done
drill holes can be made up the femoral neck and into abnormal area in the head to relieve pressure, promote healing and prevent collapse
what is the only surgical option once collapse has occurred
