Autophagy Flashcards
1
Q
What is autophagy?
A
A mechanism to digest intracellular material,
2
Q
What is macroautophagy?
A
Autophagosomes containing the material fuses to lysosome for destruction.
3
Q
What is chaperone mediated autophagy?
A
Material is directly fed into lysosome and digested. (Individual proteins)
4
Q
What is microautophagy?
A
Lysosome invaginates material and digests it.
5
Q
What are the functions of macroautophagy?
A
- Nutrient recycling
- Cellular remodelling (degradation or organelles)
- Removal of damaged components
- Killing intracellular pathogens.
6
Q
Why is macro autophagy important for red blood cell synthesis?
A
During differentiation, all organelles are degraded and the cell becomes a mature red blood cell.
7
Q
What is the dietary restriction hypothesis?
A
Starvation/Exercise = increased autophagy, increased damage repair.
