Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Autonomic nervous system
Visceral nervous system
Part of PNS
Sympathetic
Fight or flight
T1-L2
Thoracolumbar
Long preganglionic (ACh) - Short postganglionic (ACh)
Parasympathetic
Rest and digest
Cranial nerves #3,7,9,10 & S2-S4
Craniosacral
Short preganglionic (ACh) - Long postganglionic (NE)
Adrenal medulla doesn’t synapse, only pre
Sweat glands = parasympathetic but do ACh pre & post
Penis
POINT - parasympathetic
SQUEEZE - sympathetic
SHOOT - somatic
Ganglia
Prevertebral = splanchnic
Paravertebral = sympathetic chain - go to plexuses
Paths of sympathetics
- ascend & synapse ex. head
- synapse @ level -
- descend & synapse ex. lower limbs
- pass w/o synapse - splanchnic, abdominal pelvic
Somatic
Ventral root and dorsal root meet in rami and combine into spinal nerves
Autonomic
Origin at lateral horn
Preganglionic enters white ramus communicans
Postganglionic exits gray ramus communicans
Visceral nerves of thoracic
R vagus - r recurrent laryngeal - post vagal trunk
L vagus - l recurrent laryngeal - ant vagal trunk
Cardiac plexus
P CNX,
S Pre = T1-T4/5 sympathetic chain
Esophagus plexus
P CNX
S Pre = T2-T6 sympathetic chain
Bronchi & lungs
P CNX
S Pre - T1/T4 sympathetic chain
Foregut
P CNX
S Greater splanchnic - Celiac ganglion
Mouth - duodenum
Midgut
P CNX
S Lesser splanchnic - SM ganglion
Jejenum - cecum
Hindgut
P Pelvic splanchnic S2-S4
S Least splanchnic - IM ganglion
Colon - anus
