Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
autonomic nervous system
part of PNS that functions without conscious effort
*controls visceral activities
2 divisions:
sympathetic & parasympathetic
sympathetic division of ANS
prepares body for fight or flight response
parasympathetic division of ANS
prepares the body for rest and digestive activites
autonomic nerve fibers
*nerves of the autonomic nervous system
*all are motor neurons
cholinergic receptors
bind to Acetylcholine
2 types:
muscarinic receptors & nicotinic receptors
muscarinic receptors
excitatory, slow, also activated by fungal toxin, muscarine
nicotinic receptors
excitatory, rapid, also activated by tobacco toxin, nicotine
adrenergic receptors
bind to epinephrine and norepinephrine
2 types:
alpha receptors & beta receptors
alpha receptors
divided into subclasses Alpha 1 & Alpha 2
beta receptors
divide into subclasses Beta1, Beta 2, Beta 3
terminating autonomic neurotransmitter actions
acetylcholinesterase (AChE) rapidly decomposes acetylcholine
monoamine oxidase (MAO) inactivates norepinephrine
hypothalamus
regulates visceral function of ANS
medulla oblongata
regulates cardiac, vasomotor & respiratory activites of ANS
cerebral cortex
controls emotional responses
