Auditory System Flashcards
Peripheral Auditory System
Outer and middle ear
Central Auditory Nervous System
Inner ear-cochlear nucleus to primary auditory cortex
Outer ear
Function: Resonator and amplifier
Consist of pinna, external auditory meatus
Pinna
Sound localization
External auditory meatus
Also known as ear canal; Sound amplifier - open at one end closed at other
Middle Ear
Function: conduction and protection
Consist of tympanic membrane, ossicular chain (maleus, incus, stapes), middle ear muscles (stapedius and tensor tympani), and eustachian tube
Middle ear muscles
Stapedius (CN VII) and tensor tympani (CN V)
Inner Ear
Function: converts mechanical sound waves to electrical activity and neural impulses
Consist of the temporal bone, cochlea, basilar membrane, and organ of corti
Auditory Nerve (CN VIII)
Transmits auditory and vestibular info from ear to brain
