Attention Flashcards
Attention
Behavioral and cognitive process of selectively concentrating on a discrete aspect of information
Consciousness
At its simplest, is sentience and awareness of internal and external existence.
Inanttentional Blindness
Occurs when an individual fails to perceive an unexpected stimulus in plain sight, purely as a result of a lack of attention rather than any vision defects or deficits.
Blindsight
A phenomenon in which patients with damage in the primary visual cortex of the brain can tell where an object is although they claim they cannot see it.
Subliminal Perception
Perception of a series of stimulus which the person is not consciously aware of and gets under the influence involuntarily
Priming
Priming is a phenomenon in which exposure to one stimulus influences how a person responds to a subsequent, related stimulus.
Change Blindness
A phenomenon of visual perception that occurs when a stimulus undergoes a change without this being noticed by its observer.
Endogenous Attention
Attention that is attended voluntarily
Exogenous Attention
Attention that is directed involuntarily by a stimulus
Automatic Processing
A type of thinking or cognition that does not involve any effort or deliberation
Controlled Processing
A type of thinking that requires us to pay attention and deliberately put in effort
Amphetamines
Stimulants that increase dopamine in the synapse. Ex: Adderall
Methamphetamine
By blocking the reuptake of dopamine and increasing its release, it produces high levels of dopamine in the synapse. Ex: Crystal Meth
Opioids
Bind to and activate opioid receptors and are experienced as extremely enjoyable if taken in larger doses. Ex: Heroin, Fentanyl
Marijuana
Many drugs can easily be categorized as stimulants, depressants, or hallucinogens, but this one can have the effects of all three types.
