Atrophy, Hyper/Hypomobility Flashcards
Disuse atrophy
Atrophy of local musculature due to failure to use that part of the body, often due to pain.
AKA myogenic muscular atrophy.
True atrophy
AKA neurogenic
Muscle wasting caused by loss of motor innervation.
Occurs more suddenly than disuse atrophy.
Sarcopenia
Gradual decrease in muscle strength and mass due to aging.
Mobility
Ability of the body to initiate, perform, control and sustain active movements of the body, and to perform simple to complex motor skills.
Joint laxity
Tensile quality of ligamentous support is reduced/decreased.
Hypermobility syndrome
Occurs in up to 5% of those with hypermobility.
Muscle and joint pain Overuse symptoms (tendonitis) Abdominal muscle weakness Hyperextensibility Mitral valve prolapse.
Capsular pattern
A consistent, predictable pattern of passive movement restriction which occurs when the entire joint capsule is affected by a condition/pathology.
Treatment for Hypomobility
Heat Joint play MFR TrP Frictions Followed by stretch
