Arthritis affecting vertebral column

A group of inflammatory diseases affecting connective tissue, including the joints.
Metabolic arthritis
Gout
Monosodium urate crystals deposited in tissue. Accompanied by acute arthritis.
Infectious arthritides
Bacterial or viral.
Trauma (direct) or indirectly
Reiter’s Syndrome
Triad of arthritis, non-gonococcal urethritis, and conjunctivitis.
Follows inflammation of intestines or urinary tract?
Scleroderma
Systemic inflammation affecting collagen.
Slowly spreading fibrosis and collagen deposits.
Joint cartilage
Sustains joint loading and allows motion.
Collagen
Main supportive protein found in bone, tendon, cartilage, skin and connective tissue.
Osteophyte
Bone outgrowths.
Especially at joint margins
Thought to develop in order to increase SA for weight distribution.
Osteoarthritis
Most common form of arthritis.
Heberden node
Enlargement of DIPs
Seen in osteoarthritis.
Bouchard’s nodes
Enlargement of PIPs
Seen in osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Inflammatory, destructive, chronic autoimmune disorder.
Affects multiple joints and connective tissue throughout the body
Swan neck deformity
In RA.
PIP hyperextended, DIP flexed
Boutonnière deformity
In RA. PIP flexed, DIP extended.
